Browse through the International, Business, Metro, National, Politics and Editorial links at bottom of the front page. The Washington Times has some good reporters who break nuclear stories, and their editorial vehemence leads them to divulge significant information from time to time. A disadvantage is that they have NO archives; like the New York Times, they replace their website every day. They post no wire service stories and only selected letters to the editor (weekend edition). Their site is limited, but for those who live in D.C. it's worth browsing.

The Washington Post hosts a search engine for Associated Press. It lets you search its archives free for two weeks. You can go back to the previous day's paper (see left column), for two weeks. They have a permanent archive from September 1986, which you can search for free (it shows only the first paragraph); you must register to purchase articles more than two weeks old. The various sections of the paper reappear on the left side of the page. Be sure to check the metro section for demonstrations in Washington DC. I use the search engine to find "nucnews," but browse the whole paper for other stories about hotspots, police misconduct, etc.

USA Today's search engine goes to the entire web; it's fun for browsing, but not very efficient for daily news. Their "World," "Nation," and "Washington DC" briefs include several newswires. Political cartoons are updated weekly, from various U.S. newspapers. Usually carries the previous day's briefs toward the bottom. Should save this at least every other day.

* You'll need to subscribe to New York Times. We've been subscribed since January 1998 without any noticeable effect other than ease of access to information. Good website, though sometimes you have to dig deep. Start with "Quick Index" and open the various sections -- browse it all, there are treasures everywhere. The search engine only works for "today" -- if you search the archives, there's no good way of sorting the information, so you'll get book reviews from 1976 or essays from 1945 as well as a mishmash of articles. Several political cartoons, including Doonesbury.

Other international newspapers and USA broadcasters (such as ABC News, MSNBC, CBC) show up regularly on Excite. BBC picks up wire service articles, and does a lot of good reporting of its own. They cover one volatile issue that most U.S. papers shy away from: depleted uranium.
